Homer, AK: Day 3

>> Wednesday, September 10, 2008

So after our awesome deep sea fishing trip we made another quick trip down to the Homer Spit to eat at Captain Patti's retaurant. It was really good. We also shipped our fish from a place called Coal Point Trading. Apparently that place is owned by the guy who built the Time Bandit (you know, Deadlist Catch on TLC? Crab fishing? Yeah.) I don't know how true that is...but it sounds cool!

We also drove up to the look out over Homer to see if we could get some good pictures of the area...and we sure did! The view from this overlook was just amazing. I could've stayed there for most of the day, honestly. Dauge was manning the camera for the most part and I was just letting him play with it all. He got some good shots of the two of us with the huge, gorgeous mountains in the background.
We drove back to Anchorage on Day 3 in Homer also. On our way back we stopped at the place that is the Furthest West that you can drive in Alaska. There was apparently supposed to be some sort of plaque and we wandered around, but couldn't quite find it. Instead we found a bunch of skeletons - so we decided to not hang out for too long.

Homer, AK: Deep Sea Fishing

>> Tuesday, September 9, 2008

So now that we are home from our trip, I hope that I can finish up the exciting honeymoon pictures!

Deep sea fishing was so much fun. The boat we were on, called Memory Makers and chartered by Captain Bruce, typically carries 6 to 8 passengers for fishing. Well that day there were only two. Myself and Dauge. And it was so awesome, too! We were halibet fishing and the "rules" were that each person can only have two fish. So we had to chose wisely! We ended up with about 80 lbs of fish and 35 - 40 lbs of filets to bring home. They came in the mail today - so I sure hope they're delicious!!

The weather on the day of was amazing. It was so clear that we could see all five volcanos across the water. It turned out to be a very nice day. The sun was shining on us and there was a slight breeze. It was even "no jacket" weather - in Alaska!

I don't think I mentioned our cute little rental car yet... We asked for a compact car, I believe, but they didn't have any left. They tried to give Dauge a truck for the same price as the compact car - but gas is SO expensive! So we asked for an economy...a little Chevy Cobalt.

Homer, AK: Halcyon Heights and the first night

>> Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Halcyon Heights is a nice bed and breakfast tucked away on the hill in Homor, AK. The view from the decks are amazing - which we didn't realize until a day or so later because it was so overcast and rainy when we arrived.

This was our bedroom for the first two nights. The bed was soooo comfortable and roomy. I woke up plenty of times and couldn't even find Dauge. It was almost like I was sleeping alone! The third night we had to move to another, less impressive (but still extremely comfortable) room. The second room had the best view from the bed. We found out that we had to give up the "master suite" to another just-married couple...except they were more recently married than us, so it was okay. The shower in the room had two shower heads. It was a nice feature! I actually used both shower heads everytime I showered - and I was in there alone! It was awesome.

On our first night in Homer, we took a ride down to the Homer Spit to get our fishing licenses, find our dock we had to meet at in the morning, and to see what was going on. Dauge stopped at the end of the spit and we walked on the beach. I documented our walk on the beach because everyone kept telling me how "unromantic" our trip to Alaska would be....and that we should go to the beach. We did go to the beach! And it was great! :)

...next up, deep sea fishing!

Alaska: The beginning

>> Monday, August 25, 2008

As most people already know, Dauge and I decided to take a delayed honeymoon for several reasons. One of them being that our chances of seeing Aurora Borealis in Alaska are increased in September because that's when the "season" starts. The other reason is because we closed on our house two weeks after the wedding (I know, I know...we will post pictures of the house soon!) We are doing a lot of traveling over the honeymoon and taking a lot of pictures...so this is going to be a several part series. Starting with our trip out to Alaska and going from there...

This was our plane. It was probably one of the biggest planes I, personally, have ever been on. We sat at one of the first few windows, but I'm not totally sure which one. We rode first class for our 7.5 hour trip and I thought it was quite worth it. Would I pay for it without airline points? Probably not. But still worth it.

In first class, they serve your drinks in real glasses. Not the cheap plastic cups. And boy they want to keep your glass full too - with whatever you so choose. I chose cranberry vodka, and it was delicious.

We are staying at all Mariotts because Dauge had earned to many points working with the government and traveling all the time. This was our first night's hotel. It was right in downtown and was very comfortable and convenient. It was also snuggled between the Chevron office and the ConocoPhillips office...got to love big oil!

Here is the view from our hotel room. The following morning we could actually see Mt. McKinley from our room which is apparently a rarity, so we were pretty lucky! We wandered around the market that happens on Saturdays and Sundays in downtown. We also found out that nothing (and I mean, nothing) opens until 10am. I suppose everyone likes to sleep in around this town. After our one night here in Anchorage, we hopped in our car and headed down to Homer, AK. More to come on that!

I am a Mrs!

>> Thursday, June 19, 2008

So, I got very slack about posting here. Things got extremely busy between when I last posted and now. So I'll fill in the holes...

I started working 50 hour weeks mid-February, but it really didn't "hit" until the end of March when all of my work was due. Between working those kinds of hours, trying to plan the wedding, and trying to keep up with all of the things going on with the new house that's being built...I couldn't keep up!

The Mr. moved to Greenville at the end of April - which has been awesome. Having him here gave me extra time to take care of things that needed to be done around the apartment or for the wedding. An extra set of hands goes a long way! He started his new job at MAC - which is a part of the same company I work for, but not really. It's pretty confusing...but at the end of the day, we don't work in the same office or for the same people. And our benefits are different...so it's like we work for two separate companies.

So fast-forward about 6 weeks. The Mr. and I got married and it was wonderful! The weather was perfect, everyone had a fantastic time, and best of all - we're married! There were no major hiccups... The priest did forget our names, mispronounced The Mr.'s name (go figure) and then mispronounced our new last name...go figure, again. And the best story of all - his mom forgot her dress in Charleston. So she had to drive back to get it. They weren't late for the wedding...they got there about 2:45pm. Everything was great though. We laughed and had a great time. Afterwards we kept saying "I wish I had talked to so and so longer..."

We did a mini-moon to Charleston for two nights. We stayed at the Mills House Hotel in downtown on Meeting Street. It was *awesome*! We got upgraded to the executive floor because The Mr. is apparently a "gold card member" with Marriott. We had breakfast delivered to our door both mornings, they turned our bed down at night, and gave us some chocolate (which I know a lot of people do). We spent the morning walking through the Market downtown. We bought a few things for our new house that we've always had our eye on in Charleston. Afterwards we ate lunch at a place called Tropical Toast which was right down the street from the Mills House Hotel. The food was great! I ate the best Philly Cheese Steak I've ever had. Our plan was for us to go to the beach in the afternoon to just relax and enjoy the sun...but mother nature had another plan. It started raining after lunch and continued into the evening. It was sad, but we still had a great time with each other.

Our "official" honeymoon is at the end of August. We are taking a 2 week trip to Alaska. We are flying into Anchorage and then driving around the state. The Mr. has planned the whole trip and has had free reign to choose what he would like to do. He's asked me for my opinion a few times...but overall he's been our travel agent. I'm really looking forward to going out there. It's going to be an awesome trip!!

As for now...we're back to work as normal. Closing on our new house next Friday and moving out of my hole-in-the-wall apartment the same day. I am excited!
